Gadolinium is a silvery white metal and is found in nature only in its oxidized form. It possesses unusual metallurgical properties and as a metal absorbs neutrons, which is sometimes used to shield neutron radiography. It is too reactive to exist naturally and the only known mineral with essential gadolinium, lepersonnite, is very rare.
